A protest against the discontinuation of a Dublin Bus route serving communities such as Glasnevin, Kilmainham and Jamestown, took place in the city centre today.

Some 40 protesters gathered outside the headquarters of Dublin Bus on O'Connell Street ahead of the termination of the 19 bus route on Sunday.

As a replacement, Dublin Bus will instead run the 68 bus through the affected areas, a move which protesters said was not an adequate response.

"That bus doesn't run as frequently as the number 19 did and it didn't take us over to the north side" said Tina McVeigh from Inchicore in Dublin.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus defended the decision, saying it was part of an effort to simplify the service and deliver better value for the tax payer. She added that people would not be left without a bus service as all the stops were still on a route.
