A group of eco-activists opposing the erection of ESB pylons in east Cork have constructed a network of tunnels and tree-houses which they will inhabit in an attempt to prevent the project going ahead.

More than 20 activists have constructed a series of tunnels three feet deep along the proposed route of the ESB 220,000-volt supply line. They have built a series of treehouses in woods in Saleen and Ballynoe, near Cobh. They plan to move into the tunnels and tree-houses to prevent work on the erection of 160 ft pylons which the ESB say are necessary to bring power across Cork Harbour.

According to an ESB spokesman, Mr Michael Kelly, there will be power shortages in Cork by June next year if the pylons are delayed any longer.
