Investigators are examining why police officers opened fire on a lorry in south Armagh, it has emerged.
A number of shots were fired in the Mullaghbawn area on Tuesday night. Officers are understood to have targeted a lorry that failed to stop at a checkpoint in the area.
The PSNI said the incident is being investigated by the Police Ombudsman's Office.
Sinn Féin representatives in the area, a republican stronghold, warned that firing shots could damage attempts by the police to win their support.
Cllr Anthony Flynn said: "The PSNI have to recognise that opening fire with live rounds, particularly at a time when the roads are busy with people returning from work, is dangerous.
"It is not that long ago that the PSNI killed a man in a similar incident."
