PSNI DETECTIVES investigating the murder of an elderly Newry woman have been given a second extension to question two suspects. A woman and a man currently assisting police with inquiries at the PSNI’s serious crime suite in Antrim can be held until midday today before being charged or released.

Maire Rankin (81) was found dead at her Dublin Road home in the city on Christmas morning. She is said to have suffered multiple injuries and a murder inquiry was announced.

In Belfast, police say they are following a definite line of inquiry after three men were stabbed in an attack on a bar in the Cupar Street area of the Falls Road.

One of the victims suffered a serious stab wound to the face. Another of the victims was wounded in the side, while the third man suffered a hand injury. The incident took place shortly after midnight yesterday.
