A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered prior to the sentencing of the man who stole a BMW belonging to Kilkenny hurling star DJ Carey.
John McCarthy (21), with an address at Birchwood, Waterford has pleaded guilty to taking car as well as €2,000 cash and two mobile phones from the car at Crookstown Motors, Co. Kildare on August 20th. He is married with a five month old child.
Waterford District Court heard how DJ Carey had caught the defendant and managed to recover it after a struggle.
The court also heard the Kilkenny hurling legend had left the keys in the ignition of the car when he went to pay for diesel.
On finding the car gone DJ Carey then gave chase with the assistance of another customer at the petrol station but they lost sight of the stolen vehicle.
The BMW was spotted outside The Abbey Tavern, Celebridge, where the Kilkenny captain confronted the defendant. However, after a struggle, McCarthy ran away.
Judge William Harnett remanded the defendant in custody till November 27th, to allow for the completion of probation reports.
