The Prison Officers Association (POA) has called for a public inquiry into Cloverhill Prison following the prison's failure to pass a technical test yesterday. The £30 million prison has only 60 prisoners instead of the planned 112 because it has consistently failed to pass security system tests.
Over 400 staff recruited for the prison have had to be deployed at other prisons in Dublin, according to the POA, whose assistant general secretary, Mr Tom Hoare, said it was now time for a public body to investigate the arrangements between the Department of Justice and the contractors.
He also called on the Government to seek compensation from the contractors, Fisk, for the extra costs incurred because of the delays.
