Microbe Magic:The inner workings of the digestive system will be revealed this week to more than 1,200 school children in Cork as part of the Science Week programme.

"The Guts of Digestion" is the title of the presentation being given to fifth and sixth class students at 30 schools across Cork city by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) based at University College Cork.

The aim of the centre's Microbe Magic primary school programme is to stimulate interest among children in science and encourage them to go on to study the subject, explains Andrea Doolan, the centre's education outreach officer.

"We are conscious that science has only been introduced to the primary curriculum in the last few years so we wanted to help teachers who may not have a background in science to teach it," she said.

This is the fourth year of the primary school programme. Last year, the APC visited 170 schools in Cork and beyond and gave presentations on science-related topics to over 5,000 children. More than 1,200 school children will hear the presentation this week.
