RADIO Ireland is facing its first general election only two months after going on air.

Its coverage will concentrate on existing programmes, but with an emphasis on giving access to listeners.

DayBreak, with Emily O'Reilly and Mark Costigan, will include questions to politicians submitted by listeners, while The Last Word, with Eamon Dunphy and Ann Marie Hourihane, will travel by train to cities around the state.

Special phone, fax and email facilities will allow listeners to put questions and comments overnight, in advance of DayBreak and the Last Word.

According to the station, its coverage will focus on the issues put forward by the political parties, and on raising questions with which the voters are concerned.

Sunday Supplement will carry a review of the previous week as well as media analysis.

During the count Radio Ireland will be on air all day with reports from all 41 constituencies.

Emily O'Reilly will head the commentary team, with Mr Ted Nealon, former TD and author of Nealon's Dail Guides, providing analysis.
