The June bank holiday weekend has arrived and after a hard week’s work many will be looking forward to a three day break - and Ireland's first World Cup game tomorrow morning.
Weather-wise the weekend will begin well with just a few isolated showers in the west. By Saturday night and Sunday there will be occasional heavy showers. There will be a warm humid start to Sunday with little or no wind but it will turn fresher by Sunday evening. Met Éireann forecasts widespread heavy rain on Monday.
Roads in Galway are dry and traffic is moving well on the N6 from Dublin via Mullingar and Athlone, and on the N17 to Sligo.
There are no problems reported on the major routes in Cork with traffic moving well on the N20 through Mallow, the N22 through Macroom or the N8 via Portlaoise. Road conditions are dry.
Rail commuters on the Drogheda and Belfast service, and on northbound DARTs, can expect a bank holiday weekend of disruption with work continuing on the replacement of the East Wall Road bridge.
Also works are being carried out on the Drogheda railcar servicing project north of Drogheda station. From Saturday through Monday a limited DART and Drogheda suburban service will be available.
The Belfast Enterprise will operate full timetable. Departures from Dublin will be one hour earlier than usual with passengers being transferred by bus to Dundalk to avoid the East Wall and Drogheda works.
Special timetables will be posted at train stations throughout the country. The company expects to carry 200,000 passengers on its Intercity services this weekend.
Bus Éireann will operate its normal weekday timetable today and on Saturday June 1st and will be providing extra buses on all major routes where required.
The company will operate its normal service on Sunday although it does indicate that there may be alterations and cancellations.
On Monday Bus Eireann’s Sunday timetable will apply with the addition of extra services to cater for people returning to larger towns and cities.
On Tuesday normal services will resume except for the 06:15 Killarney/Limerick/Dublin service which will operate as on Mondays.
There will be no Aer Lingus flights today, Saturday or Sunday.
