Tens of thousands of rail commuters travelling to Dublin were forced to make alternative arrangements this morning after one of the busiest tracks into the capital was closed.
The rail line was closed between Connolly Station and Clontarf Road DART Station due to track subsidence, believed to have been caused by construction work on the Port Tunnel. The track was reopened at about 10 a.m.
Services to and from Connolly and Howth, Malahide, Drogheda, Dundalk and Belfast were severely disrupted, as were some DARTs from the south.
Iarnród Éireann spokesman Mr Barry Kenny said it would take until midday before services would return to normal. He said a one-metre square of subsidence was discovered.
The rail closures caused increased traffic on roads leading into Dublin, and long queues of vehicles developed on most routes during the morning rush-hour.
