Kigali - Hutu rebels in Rwanda killed 35 bus passengers and wounded more than 30 others in an ambush near the north-western town of Gisenyi yesterday. The victims were part of a group of 110 employees of the national brewery going to work, an official said. Militiamen asked the workers to separate along ethnic lines, before opening fire indiscriminately because the workers were slow to obey orders, the official said.

Security forces were pursuing the attackers, who fled into nearby bushes after setting the bus on fire. Hutu rebels fighting Tutsi-led governments in Rwanda and Burundi have stepped up attacks since December.
