The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has confirmed one person died and 14 were injuredin the opening raid by US-led forces in the Iraqi capital early this morning.
The Iraqi government earlier said US warplane and missile strikes on Baghdad hit empty media and customs buildings and civilian suburbs.
Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf also told a news conference Iraq had no Scud missiles, denying US and Kuwaiti military reports that Scuds had been fired at southern neighbour Kuwait.
"I heard reports that we fired Scud missiles on Kuwait. I would like to tell you that we don't have Scud missiles, and why they were fired, I don't know," Mr al-Sahaf said.
"An Iraqi civilian was martyred and several more wounded in the air strikes".
Mr al-Sahaf said the raids hit "empty buildings belonging to television and the radio stations and another empty building for Iraqi customs".
"They [the United States] also used technology from locations . . . west of Iraq to block Iraqi satellite television," Mr al-Sahaf said.
