Gary Redmond, the incumbent president of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), has been re-elected for a second term.

Mr Redmond, from Arklow in Co Wicklow, served as student union president in University College Dublin before being elected as USI president in April 2010. He was returned to the position unopposed in today's election.

The president acts as chief spokesperson and representative for the USI and is the union’s chief executive officer.

During his first term Mr Redmond organised a large student protest last November against the proposed reintroduction of student fees.

Voting took place in Dunboyne, Co Meath at the annual USI congress attended by hundreds of student representatives from different third-level colleges.

Apart from electing officers, the congress debates and decides on union policy for the upcoming year. The congress, which began Sunday, is due to continue until Wednesday.

USI was founded in 1959 and is the national representative body for students in Ireland. It represents more than 250,000 students in over forty colleges across the island of Ireland.
