T`he Northern Ireland Secretary, Dr John Reid, yesterday pledged his full cooperation with the Independent Commission of Inquiry into the 1974 Dublin-Monaghan bombings, in which 33 people were killed.

After a "useful and positive" meeting at the Northern Ireland Office with Mr Justice Barron, the judge leading the inquiry, Dr Reid said he would do all he could to see they were as helpful as possible to the inquiry team.

An "extensive trawl" of files in Whitehall departments and agencies has been underway since Mr Justice Barron's request for information last year, London said.

Dr Reid said he had assured Mr Justice Barron "of the seriousness with which the Government took requests for information", and that the Northern Ireland Forensic Science Service and police in the North had "already supplied large amounts of material".

Disputing this, Justice for the Forgotten, the campaign group set up by relatives of the people killed and injured, said it wanted the British to provide information from Whitehall or security files. The group's secretary, Ms Margaret Urwin, said they were "very disappointed at the negative tone and lack of information" in Dr Reid's statement.
