LONDON - The threat of closure of six World Service language sections has receded after the BBC won a battle with the Foreign Office to protect its funding.

Ms Caroline Thomson, deputy managing director for the service, said: "We have been on a roller coaster in 1996, but now we have been given a breathing space."
