Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of 10 sailors from a Libyan cargo ship that sank off the Algerian coast and are searching for 15 crew members still missing, a coastguard official said today.
The Jawgal ship, carrying 7,700 tonnes of flour, was on its way to Tripoli in Libya from the Moroccan port of Casablanca when it sank on Thursday in bad weather with 34 people on board.
"We found the body of one sailor later on Saturday, bringing the total number of bodies recovered...to 10," a senior official at the Algerian coastguard said.
He said rescue teams resumed the search early today after a break during last night.
Nine sailors who were found alive by rescuers returned home to Libya yesterday.
The ship was 20 miles off the coast from Skikda, 340 kilometres east of Algiers, when it sank.
