THE British government last eight promised to examine a trial in which a rapist was allowed to publicly humiliate his victim by questioning her in court over six days about the intimate details of her terrifying ordeal.

The announcement came as the 34 year old victim, a mother of two, called for the law to be overhauled.

Ralston Edwards (42), who could face jail for life after being convicted on two charges of rape, had pleaded not guilty when the trial opened and elected to defend himself.

This gave him the right to cross examine the woman, about the attack and make her relive her 16 hours in his hands.

"Thank God he has been found guilty. I just cannot talk about it anymore," the victim said as she left court. "But the law must be changed. I do not want other women to go through what I have been through."

Lawyers, court workers, police and women's groups also joined the call.

A spokesman at the Home Office said: "The government is concerned to ensure that victims of these hideous crimes are adequately protected and we will be giving further consideration to the issues raised by this case."

Edwards was warned by Judge Ann Goddard that she considered him dangerous. As she was considering passing a life sentence, she said she wanted psychiatric reports before passing sentence.

Edwards, who has previous convictions for a rape and violence to woman, had chosen to defend himself. He put his victim through days of gruelling questioning about her experiences at his hands.

Edwards showed no emotion as the jury returned their verdicts after nearly five hours of deliberations.
