Police have fired plastic baton rounds after being attacked by a loyalist crowd with pipe bombs in north Belfast this evening.

The violence began shortly after 8 p.m. when a crowd of about 100 people attacked security forces with at least five pipe bombs.

According to a police spokesman, up to 21 blast bombs, 26 petrol bombs were thrown and there had been three reported shooting incidents.

Stones and other missiles were also thrown in the disturbances.

The disturbance was focused around the Limestone Road area. A car was hijacked and set alight in nearby Robina Street in the loyalist Tiger's Bay area.

A loyalist crowd gathered at the Halliday's Road junction in the Tiger's Bay area.

There have been disturbances in north Belfast on an almost daily basis since the weekend.
