Four people have died as a result of road traffic accidents since Sunday evening, bringing the number of road fatalities over the bank holiday weekend to 10.

A 21-year-old pedestrian died on the outskirts of Navan, Co Meath, shortly after 3.15 a.m. yesterday after being struck by a car. He was Mr Stewart Rennicks from Navan.

At 1.15 a.m. yesterday a man was killed when the car he was driving at Allenwood, Co Kildare, hit a bridge and plunged into the Grand Canal.

The body of the driver was recovered by gardaí and taken to Naas General Hospital. He was Mr Martin Byrne (38), Allenwood South, Co Kildare.

On Sunday evening a man died in an accident involving two cars in a head-on collision at 7.15 p.m. at Castletown, Dunleer, Co Louth.

He was Mr John Connolly (30), Dunleer, Co Louth, who was the driver of one of the cars.

The five occupants of the other car, members of one family, were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

The youngest, a three-year-old boy, was in critical condition and transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, overnight.

In Co Mayo a 90-year-old man died at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, at 1 p.m. on Sunday of injuries sustained in an accident on March 1st.

Mr Jim Dyer, Brackloon South, Ballyhaunis, was seriously injured in the square in the town when the van he had been leaning against pulled away, causing him to fall to the ground.

The driver was unaware that Mr Dyer, who had been chatting to an acquaintance, had been leaning on the vehicle.

Six further deaths had occurred on the roads since the beginning of the bank holiday weekend. These included two men killed in a car crash near Castletown on the main Carlow-Wexford road at 3.15 a.m. on Saturday.

A 24-year-old motor-cyclist, named as Mr Paul Caffrey (24), Glasnevin Park, Finglas, Dublin, was killed when he lost control of his motor-cycle on Saturday night.

In the North three people died as a result of road accidents over the weekend.

A man was killed after being struck by a car in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, early on Sunday morning. A 70-year-old woman was killed on Friday night when struck by a car on Kiln Hill, Armagh city.

And a 17-year-old man, injured in a road accident near Ballymena, Co Antrim, last Tuesday, died in hospital early on Saturday morning.

A man believed to be in his 60s has died in a house fire in Newry, Co Down. A fire service spokesman said at this stage the blaze was being treated as accidental. Fire engines were called to the Erskine Street premises shortly before 1.30 a.m. yesterday.
