TWO more years have been added to six years imprisonment already being served by a, syringe point robber, who Judge Kevin Haugh said was "rather unwise". Patrick McAuley was convicted by a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury last month of carrying out a syringe point robbery in D'Olier Street on February 26th, 1996.

He was given two consecutive four year sentences with the final two suspended last May. McAuley (25), of The Square, Ringsend, was arrested four days after he robbed the BusStop newsagency by Garda Martin Harrington, who had received confidential information alleging he was the culprit.

McAuley signed a statement admitting he carried out the robbery but pleaded not guilty on arraignment and opted for trial. He claimed he signed the statement believing it was his admission to robbing the Baggot Street Abrakebabra fast food shop on another date.

The jury convicted him in over an hour after a two day trial. Judge Haugh directed that McAuley serve an additional two years on the expiration of his current six years.
