Geneva - The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs Mary Robinson, yesterday expressed concern for the safety of opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and urged the Burmese government to resolve a standoff with her now in its ninth day.

Ms Suu Kyi (55), remains camped in a car by a dirt track outside the capital Rangoon. She, her driver and 14 National League for Democracy (NLD) members were stopped by police on August 24th as they headed out of the capital and are refusing to heed government requests to return home.

It was the first time Ms Suu Kyi had tried to leave Rangoon since another roadside confrontation in 1998. Mrs Robinson called on Burma's government to "take the necessary steps to resolve the situation in line with international human rights standards".
