Former England captain Bryan Robson has made an inquiry about the Nigeria coaching job, the Nigerian FA's (NFA) secretary-general said today.

Taiwo Ogunjobi said ex-Manchester United midfielder Robson, 46, made a "routine phone call" to ask him about the position, which Nigeria are keen to fill with a foreign coach.

"Robson called me once or twice to inquire about the job and I directed him to discuss it with our technical committee,"

Robson was not among the 51 people who originally applied for the job, for which the NFA technical committee earlier this month short-listed six candidates for interview.

Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu has been criticised by his compatriots for not being technically equipped for the job.

Robson's last high-profile coaching position was with Middlesbrough in the Premiership, who he left by mutual consent in June 2001 after seven years at the club.

He took them to two League Cup finals and an FA Cup final, losing all three.

During his 22-year playing career Robson, who captained Manchester United, made 731 league and cup appearances.
