Andy Roddick won a Grand Slam victory for the first time last night when he beat Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3 7-6 (7/2) 6-3 in the US Open men's singles final at Flushing Meadows.
Ferrero was unable to handle Roddick's service as the American served faster than any player had during the championships.
Roddick, seeded four won the first set after breaking the French Open champion in the fourth game.
The second set was a far more even affair, going with serve until the tie-break. The first five points all went against serve but then Roddick took control to win with six consecutive points.
The third set provided further evidence of Roddick's drive and he sealed victory by firing three consecutive aces past the third seed.
Roddick burst into tears as he clinched victory and climbed into the stands to embrace coach Brad Gilbert.
