The Rotunda hospital in Dublin has proposed moving to the Mater hospital site if the Mater gets the contract for the new national children's hospital.

The Rotunda proposal to move to a centralised complex for paediatric and maternity services was contained in a submission this week to the Health Service Executive/Department of Health review group examining sites for the children's hospital.

The Rotunda has been at its Parnell Street site at the top of O'Connell Street since 1757.

The HSE recently asked Dublin's three maternity hospitals for their views on proposals to incorporate maternity services with the proposed children's facility.

Master of the Rotunda hospital Dr Michael Geary said yesterday the medical board and board of governors had considered the principle of co-location on an adult hospital campus.

It is understood that the hospital has told the review group it would be willing to move if it was considered to be in the interests of patient care.

Dr Geary said the hospital would await the outcome of the review group's deliberations.
