Airtricity League round-up:Two goals in the space of four minutes midway through the second half saw Shamrock Rovers consolidate their position at the top of the Airtricity League Premier Division as they won 2-0 at Drogheda.
Drogheda battled gamely throughout and were enjoying their best spell of the match when the Hoops struck twice to secure the points.
Rovers broke the deadlock with sixty-eight minutes gone and the goal was simplicity itself as Billy Dennehy made progress down the left before sending the ball into Gary Twigg who ghosted through the middle to guide the ball to the net.
Four minutes later the visitors sealed their win when Billy Dennehy pulled on a loose ball just inside the box to send it past Duggan.
St Patrick’s Athletic fell three points behind Rovers in the title race as they were beaten 3-2 at Bray Wanderers.
The Dubliners actually enjoyed the bulk of the possession over the course of the evening and created the lion’s share of the scoring chances but in the end the difference between the two sides was that Wanderers took theirs to grab the points.
Bohemians difficult week off the pitch got even worse on it as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat against nine man Galway United.
The Gypsies had plenty of chances to win the game, but defensive lapses have hurt them all season and again they slipped up in front of their own goal.
Galway went in front on 41 minutes, Stephen O’Donnell sweeping home a free kick. And things got worse for Bohs when Jamie McKenzie skinned Jason McGuinness and squared for Stephen Walsh who couldn’t miss.
A brave diving header from Shaun Williams earned Sporting Fingal a second 1-0 league win in succession to move them third in the table as Dundalk’s woes continued as they finished with ten men.
