Rugby fans looking for refreshment tomorrow within the vicinity of Lansdowne Road can save up to 95 cent on a glass of bottled water and up to €1.45 on a pint of Guinness by shopping around, according to a new price survey.

Published yesterday by director of consumer affairs Carmel Foley, the survey aims at stamping out unwarranted profiteering ahead of the French game, as well as creating greater price-consciousness among revellers.

Ryan's at Beggars Bush was found to have had the cheapest prices in a spot-check this week, quoting €3.35 for a pint of Guinness, €3.80 for a pint of Budweiser and €1.85 for a 250ml bottle of sparkling water. The most expensive bottle of water was €2.80, charged both in O'Donoghues, Merrion Row and The Henry Grattan, Lower Baggot Street. Both Crowe's Pub, Merrion Road and The President's Bar in the Davenport Hotel charged €2.75.

The most expensive pint of Guinness was €4.80 in the Horseshoe Bar in the Shelbourne Hotel; followed by €4.30 in the Cellar Bar, Merrion Hotel; and €4.20 in three pubs - Foleys, Merrion Row; The 51, Haddington Road; and The Waterloo, Upper Baggot Street. Ms Foley said a survey carried out ahead of the England game last month encouraged most of the publicans in the area not to increase their prices for the day of the match.
