Khartoum - The Sudanese leadership called for calm yesterday after President Omar al-Beshir suspended rival Mr Hassan al-Turabi as ruling party secretary general. Most Khartoum newspapers published a call by the Interior Minister, Mr Abdel Rahim Hussein, for the news media to help "unify ranks" rather than "fan the conflict," after Mr al-Turabi lost his National Congress party post on Saturday.

But Mr al-Turabi yesterday threatened to take action against Mr Beshir, whom he accused of trying to ingratiate himself with the West "by undermining the religion of God."
