Ryanair said today its September load factor - which measures the proportion of available seats sold - was 87 per cent.

The carrier, which has been cutting fares to fill seats, warned last month that falls in average fares in the second half of the year would be at the worse end of its 10-20 per cent forecast range.

Like other European carriers, Ryanair faces pressure from soaring oil prices and a price war on short-haul routes.

It has repeatedly warned of an industry "bloodbath" this winter as intensifying competition and slower demand put the crunch on ticket prices, although analysts say the Dublin-based carrier is in a better position than most of its smaller rivals.

Ryanair, whose existing insurance against rampant oil prices is due to expire at the end of this month, has said it does not intend to rehedge so long as prices remain at current levels.

Ryanair's Dublin-listed shares were trading 0.24 per cent firmer at €4.10.
