Charges against six men accused of raping a baby in October will be withdrawn today for lack of evidence, the director of public prosecutions in South Africa's Northern Cape province said.

Advocate Lungi Mahlati said he had decided to withdraw the charges on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence against the men.

The rape of the nine-month-old girl, later named "Tshepang" ("Have Hope") to protect her identity, outraged South Africans and prompted huge demonstrations when the men appeared in court.

The men, aged between 24 and 66, were accused of raping and indecently assaulting Tshepang in Louisvale in the Northern Cape.
