Pete Sampras moved into the semi-finals of the Stella Artois ATP event today with his second victory of the day, beating sixth seed Jan Michael Gambill 7-6, 7-5.
Britain's Tim Henman struggled to defeat Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan to also reach the semis.
Sampras, seeded second, had earlier completed a rain-delayed victory over Dutchman Jan Siemerink. He will next meet either defending champion Lleyton Hewitt or British 12th seed Greg Rusedski who play later in the day.
Sampras did just enough against fellow American Gambill, serving with power and direction and hitting his volleys crisply.
The pair were inseparable in the first set, but in the tiebreak Sampras stepped up a gear, taking it 7-1 with some inspired grasscourt play.
He again left it to the last minute to pinch the second set, breaking in the 11th game before serving out, polishing Gambill off with an ace down the middle.
The top half of the draw sees Henman and Wayne Ferreira meet in the semis.
Henman moved into the last four with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Srichaphan, but he was far from convincing. The British fourth seed was broken twice in the opening set and let a 4-0 tiebreak lead slip before finally beating the Thai world number 131.
