Applied Leaving Cert: English and CommunicationStudents and teachers of the Leaving Certificate Applied English and Communication were broadly satisfied with yesterday's paper, although there was a lot of blank space to fill where students may have been accustomed to a more structured question and answer format.

Students were tested on a range of areas such as designing a questionnaire, assessing the health and safety standards of their work experience placement and writing a letter to a solicitor.

"Many adults would freeze at the prospect of writing a letter to a solicitor but this year's LCA students would be well able for it," said John McGabhann, expert with the Teachers Union of Ireland. "Not many adults would be able to place themselves in the position of general manager of a mini-company either but the LCA fosters this kind of practical assertiveness."
