The Riyadh ruling family has insisted the militants who killed at least 17 in a weekend suicide attack will not destabilise the kingdom.

The United States says al-Qaeda wants to topple the pro-Western Saudi government and royal family.

US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage made the comments on Al Arabiya television, excerpts of which were broadcast today.

The United States warned of the possibility of future attacks on Saudi Arabian soil following this weekend's suicide attack.

The world's biggest oil exporter, battling a surge in Islamist violence, said it would hunt down those behind the attack and, along with Washington, blamed al-Qaeda.Supporters of the Saudi-born Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda group have threatened to attack Saudi Arabia's royal rulers and Westerners in the kingdom. A purported bin Laden audio tape last month vowed to strike American targets inside and outside the United States.

Saudi Arabia has been under pressure to act against al-Qaeda since the attacks on US cities on September 11th, 2001. Most of the attackers were Saudis and Washington blames al-Qaeda.

Rescue teams were still searching the wreckage from the latest attack more than 24 hours after bombers posing as police blew up their explosives-rigged car in the Muhaya compound in the Saudi capital.

In addition to the dead, officials said around 120 people were wounded, including 36 children.

The blast damaged the 200 villas in the compound, days after Western nations issued fresh terror alerts and Washington shut its missions in the kingdom.
