MEDIA COVERAGE: While an estimated 1,400 members of the media attended the Games, the British media contingent was notable for its absence.

Some television and radio crews and reporters did attend the Games but the week's events received scant coverage in the British daily newspapers and on news programmes.

This was surprising, given the proximity of the event to Britain and the large British team in action.

The 259-strong team was boosted by more than 500 parents and supporters.

Mr Julian Davis, media relations director for the Games, said there had been strong media representation from countries such as Denmark, Austria, Germany and Italy, with some crews sending back footage every day.

"There were full crews from about 40 countries but I would say that the UK was one of the least visible of all, which is kind of odd."

Before the Games started, organisers had expected the most coverage from the media here, followed by Britain, with coverage dwindling as the distance from Ireland grew.

Getting media coverage of Special Olympics events is a slow process, according to Mr Gordon McCormack, the British head of delegation.

BBC's Grandstand will be screening a 15-minute segment next Saturday, while a Scottish station has followed three athletes through the Games.

Irish media coverage was "fantastic", he said, and the awareness of disability issues was very high in this country.

It was up to Special Olympics organisers in Britain to try to generate similar interest in their area.

When Glasgow hosted the European Games in 1990, it generated a lot of media coverage, Mr McCormack said.

"Newspapers are interested in what is going on in their own area, whether it's Glasgow, London or Dublin.

"We need to take the case up and raise awareness to the level it's at in Ireland."
