A man linked to the Scottish National Liberation Army who caused a major alert by phoning a bomb warning to police in Inverness from Dublin in March 1995 was given a two-year suspended prison sentence by the Special Criminal Court yesterday.

Hugh Smith McMahon (33), single, from Glasgow, with an address at Matt Talbot Court, Dublin, pleaded guilty. He made the call from a phone box while under surveillance by gardai. The message was taped by Scottish police and Smith McMahon later admitted he had made the call. He used a code word previously used by the SNLA.

He had previous convictions in Scotland and had two previous convictions in Dublin for causing criminal damage.

Mr Justice Johnson said the court would suspend the prison sentence on condition that Smith McMahon did not associate with subversive or criminal organisations.
