Detectives were today continuing the hunt for a gang of art thieves who stole a Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece from a Scottish castle.
The painting is believed to be one of the most valuable in Britain and was part of the £400 million sterling (€580 million) art collection of the Duke of Buccleuch at his home Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries and Galloway.
A white Volkswagen Golf, believed to be the getaway car, was discovered last night in a wooded area north east of Carronbridge, about two miles from the castle.
Police now believe a second vehicle was involved in the theft.
Two men posing as tourists removed the painting, Madonna with the Yarnwinder, after overpowering a female tour guide, and escaped in a car parked outside.
Another two men seen in the white Volkswagen Golf at the time are believed to be involved.
Police at airports, ferry terminals and in the rest of Europe have been alerted and issued with descriptions of the thieves.
Because the painting has remained in private hands for generations its market value is unknown, but art experts believe it could be worth anything between £25 million and £40 million.
