An off-duty garda may face charges following his arrest for alleged drink-driving after he was involved in a road accident in which a pedestrian died at the weekend. Last week, another garda was suspended pending the outcome of an investigation into a hit-and-run accident in which a cyclist was killed.

Mr Alan Jones (29) of Garryhinch, Portarlington, Co Laois, was killed when he was struck by a car on the outskirts of Portarlington at about 2 a.m. on Saturday. An off-duty garda arrested at the scene was taken to Portlaoise garda station and released later. A Garda investigation is under way. It is understood that the garda is based in Dublin.

A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the case of the Dublin detective who was arrested in relation to a hit-and-run accident on the Naas dual carriageway a week ago. The detective, who worked with the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI), was arrested under the Criminal Justice Act and was released after questioning. Gardai had earlier recovered an unmarked Garda car which is understood to belong to the NBCI motor pool at Harcourt Terrace, Dublin.
