The churches in Ireland have yet to fully understand how deep sectarianism runs in the experience of many people, and not just in Northern Ireland, the Archbishop of Armagh has said.
Dr Robert Eames, speaking at St Aidan's Cathedral in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, yesterday, said there was a situation "on this island home of ours where any suggestion of greater co-operation and understanding between the churches is opposed by many".
Describing the situation as a "tragic comment on our lives", he said sectarianism remained the greatest sin and the greatest obstacle to full understanding and Christian love in Ireland.
