The sentencing of an Englishman who raped and sexually abused a Co Louth girl over a number of years has been adjourned for a week by Mr Justice Smith at the Central Criminal Court.

George Kerr (53), a native of Liverpool, with an address at Callystown, Clogherhead, Co Louth, was found guilty of 12 charges of raping and indecently assaulting her between 1989 and 1997.

Mr Justice Smith said he wanted to consider the victim impact and probation reports which had only just reached him. He needed to adjourn sentence for a further week.

Garda Maureen McFadden said the families had been great friends for several years since Kerr came to Clogher head about 1978. The offences came to light when the victim confided in a garda.

In December a jury convicted Kerr after seven days. The victim's family had asked that the media name Kerr, who had denied the charges.
