DUBLIN AIRPORT:An investigation into a serious incident at Dublin Airport last year has concluded that "the outcome might have been very different" only for the prompt actions of a Ryanair flight crew.
On May 21st, 2011, a Ryanair flight was forced to abort its take-off at over 200km an hour after a Monarch Airlines aircraft entered the same runway and went into its path. The Ryanair pilot and co-pilot simultaneously carried out a rejected take-off, bringing their aircraft to a safe stop with 360 metres to spare.
The Monarch Airlines Airbus A321, with 152 passengers and six crew on board, was taxiing to the runway for take-off to Tenerife, while the Ryanair flight, destined for Vilnius in Lithuania with 145 passengers and six crew, had already been cleared for take-off.
The report concluded that the Monarch crew were “possibly distracted” by cockpit tasks during a busy taxi and that they were travelling towards a bright and low sun.
