Seven people died in road accidents over the weekend

Seven people died in road accidents over the weekend. A seven-year-old girl, her mother and aunt were killed when the car in which they were travelling collided with a gas tanker near Slane on the Collon road in Co Louth on Saturday.

They were named as Ms Elaine Gilsenan (25), her daughter Rachel and her older sister Joan (31). Ms Elaine Gilsenan and Rachel were living in Ardee, while Ms Joan Gilsenan was from Cornhill, Co Louth.

The crash happened in thick fog just after 10 a.m. and because of concern over gas in the tanker, the road was not reopened until late on Saturday evening.

On Saturday night a man in his late 60s died after being knocked down as he crossed the road near his home on Avenue Road, Dundalk. Mr Thomas Mulholland died in Louth County Hospital.

Earlier, a woman died when a car in which she was a passenger collided with another vehicle in Cahirciveen, Co Kerry. She was named as Ms Antonia Howard, from Strandsend, Cahirciveen.

Mr Michael McCarthy (25), of Toomevara, died on Saturday evening after he was struck by a car as he cycled on the main Toomevara-Nenagh road at Clona slea, Co Tipperary.

A Co Armagh man, Frederick Wright (49), Clonmacash Road, Annaghmore, died in a collision of two cars outside Portadown, Co Armagh, on Saturday evening.

A boy, believed to be aged 12 and from the Athlone area, was in a critical condition last night after he was struck by a car on the Tuam road just outside Athlone. He was taken to Ballinasloe Hospital with serious head injuries and was subsequently transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
