Four adults and three children have been taken to hospital following a three car pile-up on the M50 motorway in Dublin tonight.
The collision occurred under a bridge at about 8pm just before the southbound exit of the Carrickmines junction near Sandyford.
It’s believed that one of the three vehicles entered the main stretch of the motorway via a slip-road before colliding with a second vehicle. A third vehicle subsequently collided with the other two.
One man was described as being in a serious condition and has been taken to Beaumont Hospital.
It’s believed the other six individuals – including the three children who were in a single car with a woman – are not in danger but have been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital and Tallaght Hospital respectively.
Five ambulances are in attendance as well as three fire engines and a district officer’s car belonging to Dublin Fire Brigade.
An Emergency Tender was also called to the scene, which is specialised for heavy rescue with larger cutting equipment and more floodlights.
The motorway remains closed between the scene of the accident and the previous junction at Ballinteer. A spokeswoman for the AA said traffic has been “at a complete standstill” since the accident happened because of a delay setting up a diversionary road.
Vehicles are now in a position to divert – but there are still “long delays” she said.
