BahrainSinn Féin has called on Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore to intervene in the case of human rights activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja who is on hunger strike in prison in Bahrain.

Party spokesman Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD said the former employee of Dublin- based human rights body Front Line Defenders was “in a critical condition and is close to death”, and that Mr Gilmore must take urgent action in an effort to save his life.

“Despite the recommendation in the report of the Bahrain independent commission of inquiry, that all those who had been tried by military courts should have their cases reviewed by ordinary courts, this has not yet occurred,” Mr Mac Lochlainn said in a statement.
