Sinn Féin today urged the British prime minister Mr Tony Blair not to give more concessions to unionists to help Mr David Trimble overcome the latest challenge from within his party.
Party vice president Mr Pat Doherty said: "The British government know exactly what is required to get the process back on track.
The West Tyrone MP told Downing Street: "They need to set a date for an election and get the institutions back up and running.
"It is perfectly clear that going down the road of undermining the Good Friday Agreement to support David Trimble is a flawed strategy.
"The peace process and the Good Friday Agreement cannot be reduced to one issue - David Trimble's leadership of the UUP.
"The British government knows it is wrong to step outside the terms of the Good Friday Agreement when what is required is the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement."
