The Green Party said today it plans to head the campaign of political opposition to a war against Iraq and the use of Shannon airport by US Air Force planes.
Mr John Gormley TD, the party chairman, said it was "now clear that Shannon could become a terrorist target in the event of a war."
"We are once again calling on the Government to debate a motion in the Dáil on the use of Shannon. There can be no doubt that Shannon is being used for war preparations and that the approval of the Dáil should be sought."
Mr Gormley accused the Government of being "out of step with public opinion" on the issue.
"It is totally irresponsible to drag us into a war, which is essentially about access to oil reserves. The enslavement of Irish foreign policy to US interest is pitiful to observe.
"Many people are now genuinely concerned that our country could be a target for a terrorist attack because of the assistance given to the American war effort."
