The 54-year-old star, whose hits included Addicted to Love, suffered the attack in the early hours of this morning.

He was on a two-day break in the city with his partner, Mary Ambrose, after recording a TV appearance in Britain. Palmer had been in London to record a television show for Yorkshire TV two days ago.

A spokesman for the company said: "We are shocked and saddened to hear of Robert Palmer's death.

"We can confirm that Robert recorded links two days ago for a regional programme for Yorkshire Television called My Kinda People.

"At the moment no decision has been made regarding the future of the programme, as everyone's thoughts are with Robert's family and friends at this difficult time."

He was spending a short time in Paris before heading home to Switzerland, where he had lived for the past 16 years.
