JOHN HUME yesterday accused Sinn Fein of trying to promote division within the party and said Gerry Adams was guilty of "irresponsible electioneering". His accusation follows Sinn Fein questioning the loyalty of the party's deputy leader, Mr Seamus Mallon, to the party leader's policy, reports Carol Coulter.

Mr Hume also rejected Sinn Fein's criticism for not entering an electoral pact. "I as leader of the SDLP made very clear that we would discuss electoral strategy with them if there was an IRA ceasefire. They have done nothing about that and therefore have made a pact impossible," he said in a statement.
