The East and West Link Toll bridges in Dublin look set to be hit by industrial action next week after SIPTU served strike notice on National Toll Roads on behalf of its 100 members.

SIPTU Branch Official Ms Ethel Buckley said the issues in dispute are low pay and unsocial working hours. Industrial action is planned for Tuesday.

She said members had contributed to the company's profitability by adopting new work practices and technological change, but basic pay started at £5.87 an hour, rising to £6.36 an hour over a ten year incremental scale, including the first phase of PPF.

"We have followed the agreed disputes procedure up to and including a full Labour Court hearing at which the Court said 'there may be merit in the union's claim for increased pay and leave.'The Court also acknowledged that SIPTU members had co-operated with on-going change since 1997.

"However, despite their commitment to such procedures, our members now find that serving strike notice is their only hope of progressing their claim to a satisfactory conclusion", Ms Buckley said.
