The remaining nine sisters of the Order of Mercy in Clifden, Connemara, left their convent home for the last time on Friday.

The order was invited to Clifden in 1860 by Archbishop John MacHale of Tuam and has served the people of the town ever since. Six of the sisters will move to houses in the Galway suburb of Knocknacarra, while three will continue to work in Clifden.

The Convent of Mercy in Carna in the Connemara Gaeltacht also closed this year.
