An Amtrak passenger train derailed today in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, seriously injuring at least six people.

Police told CNN television there had been no fatalities. "We know we have injuries on the train itself, but we have no reports of any fatalities, which is definitely a Godsend," Officer Joyce Sutter of the Montgomery County, Maryland police department told CNN.

Amtrak spokesman Mr Dan Stessel told NBC television that the accident involved a 13-car train and that 11 of the cars had tipped over during the derailment.

The train was carrying 190 passengers and 12 crew members, he said.
