Six teachers have been given ASTI achievement awards for their contributions at local, national and international level. The ASTI president, Ms Catherine Fitzpatrick, said the achievements of the six showed that ASTI members "have enriched Ireland's social and cultural fabric through their work in the areas of sport, conservation and the arts".
They are: Mr Terry Flanagan of Moyle Park College, Dublin, a conservationist, who has been heavily involved in building up the Irish Seal Sanctuary;
Mr Gerry Murphy of Gonzaga College, Dublin, who has written several musical scores, including an orchestral work, Dialects for Uileann Pipes and Orchestra;
Mr Brian Maye, of Santa Maria College, Dublin, who has written a history of Fine Gael and a biography of Arthur Griffith;
Mr Pat Morris, of Colβiste Chr∅ost R∅, Co Cork, who last year represented Ireland in the World Handball Championships, in America, where he reached the semi-finals;
Mr John Kearney, of St Colman's College, Fermoy, who has won numerous county and provincial titles in track and cross-country competitions;
Mr Tiernan Dolan of St Mel's College, Longford, who has worked in the Third World as an aid worker over many years, mainly with GOAL. His photographs of the Third World have appeared in exhibitions in the Republic, America, the US and Britain.
